All levels of students welcome. Whether you've been leading kirtan for a long time or you've started started to explore chanting, this program will help you sound more traditional and less western when leading kirtan. We focus on proper pronunciation of Sanskrit and exploration of scales and time signatures that are distinctly eastern.
Rāgas are the Indian scales, tāla is working with time in beats other than an 8 count, and śruti's are the microtones that transport and captivate the listener into a meditative listening trance like state.
Part of what distinguishes eastern music from western is the use of notes that live inbetween the 12 note chromatic scale of the west. Sliding the notes from one to the next with grammatic precision creates unique tones that are deified emotional healers. These deities of sound are called śrutis.
In person cohort lasts 3 months, and students can schedule sessions on zoom or live and in person at the Nāda Room in Kingston, NY.
The materials in "Ocean of Sound" could take you years to move through and you'll have lifetime access. Allison will get you started and you can take your time, fully resourced, to grow your chanting and harmonium practice in the direction you want to expand.

This is a group tutoring course for students of Steven Highburger. The focus will be on what "Light on Life" by Dr. Robert Svoboda and Hart DeFouw has to say on "why" someone's lagna creates the disposition it does. Assessing the lagna is primary to being able to interpret a person's birth chart, and we will try to understand each rising sign using the following birth charts of famous people.

Pre-requisite: You have completed Steven Highburger's Level 4 Course
Join us for a review of the materials in Steven Highburger's Level 4 curriculum, Amśa Vicāra. Integrate the material and refine your ability to assess an individual's daśa and bhukti. Allison has been assisting Steven's 3 year program since 2021.
Review will focus on Iyer's method of analyzing amśa through daśā and bhukti, amśa yogas, amśa strength, classical amśa vicara, and most importantly, practice integrating the many principles offered in Level 4 so that you find a natural flow with the material. We'll start with 4 classes and discuss the continuation after our introductory 4 weeks.
Steven will pop in monthly for a 30 minute Q&A once or twice, and Steven will be in touch with Allison throughout the cohort to answer any lingering questions.

K. Sridhar, one of the world’s finest exponents of the Sarod
Allison is a scholar, advisor, and teacher with 25 years experience in Vedic (Indian) wisdom systems. She's dedicated half of her life to practices from ancient India that prove to be easy technologies for calming the mind and living with more grace. Her innovative program "Nāda Nakṣatra Upāsana" teaches a practice she's been learning as an oral tradition for the past decade that links Vedic Astrology with South Indian rāga music learned from her primary mentor K. Sridhar. Her program "Ocean of Sound" teaches chanters how to lead kirtan utilizing the basic building blocks of Indian rāgas and tālas and includes an extensive Music Library built by Allison and friends during the pandemic.
Allison is a decades long student of Patāñjali Yoga and Sanskrit, and has served as a TA for her Jyotișa teacher Steven Highburger since 2021.
Allison's music guru K. Sridhar has asked her to write a book on the intersection of Indian Classical Music and Vedic Astrology. K. Sridhar has taught her in the oral tradition for the past 10 years and there are no books currently available on this subject. This unique vidya has tremendous potential to calm the mind, even the highly overactive mind that has a hard time settling down.
Writing a book is a huge undertaking energetically and financially. Your contributions towards a 2026 completion and subsequent publication are greatly appreciated.
